You ensure that your passengers reach their destination safely and on time. But Bus driver's work goes much further than that. On line 22, for example, you are the familiar face for people from the East Indies neighborhood who go shopping. And on line 369 from Schiphol you welcome tourists to Amsterdam. And that while you are driving the very latest electric bus. The bus is your domain in which you make a hospitable contribution to pleasant transport for everyone.
You start your day at one of the garages. Your first year of service you have day shifts. This means that you work between 04:00 and 01:00. The coffee at GVB is good, so while you pour it again, you talk to some colleagues. Then you will make your way to your bus and start the first ride of the day.
You usually drive on a number of different lines per day, for a maximum of 4 hours in a row. Then you have a break at an end point. Here you eat something, take a rest and meet other drivers. If you have an electric bus, you can charge it in between. In the bus you also check tickets, address passengers about their behavior and answer questions.
Sylvester, Public Transport bus driver via Olympia at GVB: "Being a bus driver is fantastic. I see Amsterdam waking up and going back to bed. For me, this work is a childhood dream. It is so cool to drive an 18 meter long bus right through Amsterdam. I also really enjoy all those different people. Every day is full of little surprises".
