Lab Manager Hightech Systems

The position entails supervising laboratory activities in a lab where R&D and experimental work takes place concerning nano-opto-mechanical instruments (NOMI). NOMI is a type of instrument that is based on opto-mechanics interactions with matter at the nanoscale. Examples are scanning probe microscopy, near-field instruments and high resolution optical meta-materials instruments (Meta-Instruments). Your activities and responsibilities will contain:

Sample and hardware management, such as registration and management of:

  • Test samples used for experiments

  • Hardware

  • Software

  • Owner of hardware resource planning (now: mainly AFM system)

  • Preparation of the use of hardware resources

Laboratory infrastructure management

  • The organisation of which set-up should be where in which laboratory in which timeframe including transfer if needed

  • The organisation of facilities (e.g. air pressure, power, ...) and proper cabling and installation of auxiliary hardware

  • Order materials needed for proper infrastructure (e.g. computer racks, cable ducts, ...)

  • Manage cleaning and tidying up of laboratory

  • Manage the identified required investments (now or future) and make sure these investments are put on the proper investment lists

  • Arrange new lab when necessary

  • Taking care of outillage to be paid by the projects

Access authorization management

  • Arranging proper authorization of people to the laboratories

  • Arranging lab-training when needed

Lab visit management

  • Planning and preparation of requested lab visits

  • Communication with project manager(s) and Scientific lead involved about lab visits

Support for PR-related activities

  • Prepare photoshoots for experimental setups (on request of involved PM)

  • Schedule photoshoots Accompany photographer during photoshoot

  • Aftercare (communication with photographer and PM involved)


You have a BSc or MSc in mechanical engineering, mechatronics, electrical engineering or applied physics, and at least 5 years working experience in R&D. You are therefore familiar and comfortable with the uncertainty that comes with scientific and engineering challenges. With your good communication skills, energy, creativity and a boundless curiosity, you can convince and inspire colleagues and customers alike.

You have a:

  • Good sense of ownership; defend lab interests if things become difficult
